The Complete Instruction Guide For Downloading
And Installing Wallpaper and Screensavers On This Website
I CAN'T FIND IT!
Where's My Download?
The computer newbie's most irritating problem with the internet has got to be finding all those really cool things they've downloaded. That won't be a problem if you pay attention to where you're putting them to begin with. When you click on a link to download a file, (unless it's an update within a program) no matter what popular browser you're using, you're going to get a dialog box that wants to know where you want to put that file. You don't have to keep the default location that's automatically there. Change it to something easy to find like your Desktop. You can always move the file to its ultimate location later.
SCREEN SAVERS
What do I do with the file I just downloaded?
First of all you need to unzip it.
How do I do that?
With an unzipping utility such as WINZIP or this freebie ZipItFast.
Okay, it's unzipped. Now what?
You can delete the .zip file now. Just don't delete the .scr file, or the rest of this explanation will be pointless :) Now go to the Start button on the task bar, click it, and choose Find (or Search if using Windows XP) > and then Files or Folders.... In the field titled Named: type System. In the field titled Look in: choose C:. Place a check mark in the Include subfolders box, and click the Find Now button.
My C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder was right at the top of the list as you can see above. Click on SYSTEM (the folder shown in the circle) to open it up. Not the SYSTEM32 folder unless you're using Windows XP.
Here it is. You need to click on Show Files to access the folder. Notice the nice red WARNING? That means if you touch anything in that folder your computer will blow up. Really. Okay, not, really, but there are alot of important files in there that Bill Gates doesn't want you to touch because he wants you to have a happy computer. Really. So don't mess around with the stuff in there. Just drag your .scr file and drop it in there. Make sure you don't accidentally place it in one of the folders that are in there. One day when you're sick of the screen saver taking up space on your hard drive, you can just go back in there and delete it.
If you managed to get your .scr file into the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder (or C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder for XP users) , you can close the folder now. Rightclick an empty spot on your Desktop and choose Properties. Click the Screen Saver tab at the top and then choose your screen saver from the drop down menu. Click the OK button and you're done.
Why can't I just doubleclick the file to install it? It would be a lot simpler that way.
Because these screen savers don't automatically install themselves when you doubleclick them.
Why not?
Just to make my life difficult. Now stop asking questions and go watch your screen saver.
WALLPAPER
In Internet Explorer you can set an image as wallpaper by rightclicking the image and choosing "Set as wallpaper" from the menu. I never liked doing it that way though. If you change the paper to something else and then decide to come back to the one you did with Internet Explorer, it seems to have disappeared. I prefer to save the image to my hard drive so it will be there whenever I want it. In Internet Explorer, America Online, and Netscape, you can rightclick on the image and choose Save as to save it to your computer. Then from the Properties menu (rightclick the desktop) you can browse to your image and set it as wallpaper.
